Product Information

Name:
Escin sodium
Description:

Escin sodium (escin) is a natural product that inhibits the growth of cancer cells and induces apoptosis. It has been shown to have antiproliferative effects on human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)-2-positive breast cancer cells and prostate cancer cells. Escin sodium also activates the mitochondrial membrane potential, which is required for apoptosis to occur. Studies have shown that escin increases the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol, triggering an apoptotic pathway. Escin sodium has been shown to induce apoptosis in Hl-60 cells and K562 cells in vitro by inhibiting DNA synthesis and promoting DNA fragmentation. Further studies have shown that escin can induce apoptosis in rat brain granule neurons and inhibit proliferation of human fetal bovine lung fibroblasts.
