- Elastase, pancreatic from porcine pancreas
Elastase is a proteolytic enzyme that is produced in humans by neutrophils and macrophages. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties against the nuclear DNA of the bacteria. Elastase binds to the toll-like receptor, which transmits signals from cells to the immune system. Elastase also has biochemical properties that are similar to natural compounds such as hyaluronidase and amylase. These properties can be used for wound healing and for treating inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The elastase gene encodes a signal peptide that is cleaved off so that it can be secreted out of the cell into the extracellular space by a signal peptidase. This protein has been shown to inhibit the growth factor-β1, which regulates cellular proliferation and differentiation. Elastase also has an active inhibitor, which is able to bind to its active site on elastase molecules with high affinity, preventing them from degrading
