EBPC is a biocompatible polymer that has been used to develop a device for the detection of bacterial infections. The EBPC receptor selectively binds to c. parvum, an intestinal parasite that causes chronic diarrhea. This device can be used to detect the presence of c. parvum in humans and animals by binding to their EBPC receptors with high affinity and specificity. The EBPC receptor-based device is also useful for identifying cancer cells, as the receptor binds with high affinity to low density lipoprotein (LDL) molecules found in human liver cells. In addition, EBPC has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which are beneficial in protecting against oxidative injury associated with cancer or chronic diarrhea.
