• Description: Ecgonine ethyl ester is a metabolite of cocaine that is found in the blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid of humans. It is used in drug assays to detect cocaine use. Ecgonine ethyl ester binds to the dopamine transporter and blocks dopamine uptake into cells, which leads to elevated levels of dopamine in the synapses. Ecgonine ethyl ester also inhibits serotonin reuptake and has been shown to induce apoptotic cell death in human cancer cells.
