Elemicin is a chiral monoterpene that is found in plants of the genus Plectranthus. It has been shown to have synergistic effects with other compounds, such as eugenol, in the treatment of oral pathogens and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Elemicin can be extracted by water vapor or preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The analytical method for elemicin is gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Elemicin has been shown to have carcinogenic potential in animal studies, although it has not been studied enough in humans to determine if it poses a carcinogenic risk.
