Epostane is a synthetic steroidal hormone that binds to and inhibits the action of the epidermal growth factor, which stimulates the growth of cells. Epostane has been shown to inhibit granulosa cell proliferation in vitro and suppress follicular growth in vivo. In addition, epostane has been shown to bind to glucocorticoid receptors with high affinity and inhibit the transcriptional activity of these receptors. The physiological effects of epostane are dose-dependent, with low doses leading to a decrease in cortisol concentration and high doses inhibiting the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands. Epostane also has site-specific effects on follicular growth, as it inhibits follicle development in ovaries but not in testes.
