Equilenin is a naturally occurring estrogen that is found in plants and animals. It is a bicyclic heterocycle with 17β-estradiol as its parent molecule. The conformational properties of equilenin are similar to those of estradiol, which is the most potent form of estrogen in humans. Equilenin has been shown to have pro-apoptotic activity in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce mitochondrial membrane potential collapse. Equilenin also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines.
