The major biologically active form of soybean is the isoflavone daidzein, which can be converted to equol by intestinal bacteria. Equol has been shown to have biological properties that are similar to those of the synthetic anti-cancer compound tamoxifen, and has been found to inhibit tumor growth in animal models. Equol has also been shown to have genotoxic activity as well as receptor activity for toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2). The pharmacological effects of equol are not yet fully understood but may be due to its ability to bind to DNA.
