Description

Ethambutol is an antibacterial drug that is used for the treatment of tuberculosis, especially in combination with other antibiotics. Ethambutol inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit and blocks the formation of a protein-RNA complex, which is required for translation. The concentration-time curve and hydrogen tartrate assay in vitro have been used to show its activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Ethambutol has shown efficacy against drug-resistant mutants, such as resistant mutants of M. tuberculosis and M. avium complex (MAC). In addition, ethambutol has been shown to be toxic to epidermal cells in culture and can be used as an analytical method for detecting mycobacteria infection.
