Ethionamide is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit and prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Ethionamide has been shown to be toxic to the epidermis and is used in the treatment of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis. This drug also has inhibitory properties against human serum albumin, which may lead to drug interactions. The inhibitory properties of ethionamide have been studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system. Data obtained from thermodynamic analysis reveal that ethionamide binds strongly to DNA polymerase and is a potent inhibitor of bacterial DNA replication in vitro. Ethionamide has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of erythrocyte lysis by human pharmacokinetic studies.
