Description:Etonogestrel is a progestogen that is used in combination with an estrogen as a contraceptive. It prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, which inhibits sperm penetration. Etonogestrel also increases the thickness of the endometrium, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. The drug has been shown to have no effect on lipid metabolism or carbohydrate metabolism, but may cause some side effects such as breast tenderness, headache, nausea and vomiting.
