Enflurane is a general anaesthetic agent. It is a volatile, non-flammable, inhalational anaesthetic that is used in surgery to induce and maintain anesthesia. It has a rapid onset of action and produces an anesthetic state characterized by analgesia, amnesia, muscle relaxation and loss of reflexes. Enflurane acts on the central nervous system by blocking neuronal transmission at the level of the synapse. Enflurane also binds to the ryanodine receptor which prevents calcium from entering the cell resulting in depolarization of nerve cells. The halothane concentration-response curve is shifted to the right by enflurane indicating additive effects when both agents are administered together.
