Urocanic acid can be synthesized by bacteria such as Aerobacter aerogenes and can also be found in wild-type strains of Escherichia coli. Urocanic acid is metabolized through two pathways: one that produces urea, ammonia, and carbon dioxide; and another that produces picolinic acid, caproic acid, and carbon dioxide. The latter pathway is associated with metabolic disorders such as radiation sensitivity or diabetes mellitus.
