Ethyl isothiocyanatoacetate inhibits cell proliferation by competitively binding with choline, a substrate for phospholipase A2, which catalyzes the release of arachidonic acid from membrane phospholipids. This leads to increased levels of arachidonic acid and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which may result in apoptosis.
