Ethyl dihydroxycinnamate is a sesquiterpene lactone that can be found in the Chinese herb Etoac. It has significant cytotoxicity and inhibits Cox-2, an enzyme that plays a role in inflammation. Ethyl dihydroxycinnamate also inhibits P-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is an enzyme that plays a role in the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines. Ethyl dihydroxycinnamate has been shown to have antibacterial efficacy against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Bacillus subtilis. This compound also has been shown to have anti-cancer properties, as it inhibits tumor formation by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. The reaction mechanism for this compound is not well understood but may involve hydrogen abstraction from COOH or HOCH 2 .
