Ethylene glycol monovinyl ether is a mono-functional vinyl ether. It is used in the manufacture of polymers, as a solvent, and as a stabilizer for high-performance liquid chromatography. The hydroxyl group on the ethylene glycol monovinyl ether reacts with KOH to form an ester linkage. This reaction is catalyzed by cationic polymerization. Kinetic data of this reaction mechanism are available, which can be utilized to optimize the process conditions. Ethylene glycol monovinyl ether has been shown to have effects on monoamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. Sodium salts of ethylene glycol monovinyl ether have been found to inhibit the release of these neurotransmitters from nerve terminals in cell culture studies.
