The detection of hydrogen chloride can be accomplished using an optical sensor or by microencapsulating 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene inside a polymer matrix and measuring the fluorescence from the microcapsules. The use of 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene for this application is still under investigation but it may have potential clinical use as a diagnostic tool for chronic exposure to hydrogen chloride.
