Ergosine is a natural alkaloid that has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. It is extracted from the bark of the Ergot tree and can be found in small quantities as an impurity in ergocryptine, which is a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease. Ergosine inhibits bacterial growth by binding to multidrug efflux pumps, preventing them from pumping out substances that are harmful to the bacteria. This process leads to cell death through inhibition of protein synthesis and DNA replication. The molecular docking analysis showed that ergosine binds with high affinity to the multidrug efflux pump, leading to its inhibition of function.
