It is synthesized from ethyl acetoacetate and methacrylic acid in the presence of hydrofluoric acid. The resulting product is a mixture of dihydro and trisubstituted methyl ketones that can be used as an acetoxylation or oxidant. Ethyl 3-oxoenanthate has been shown to have cardiovascular disease blocking properties. This compound also has the ability to crosslink with other molecules and can be used as a synthetic intermediate in the production of stereospecific compounds.
