Ethyl but-2-ynoate is a terminal alkyne that, when reacted with crotonic acid and propiolic acid, forms the corresponding esters. It reacts with halides to form halohydrins. The reaction of ethyl but-2-ynoate with hydroxide gives acetone via the addition of water. This compound is also an analog for acetone in chemical reactions involving functional groups and catalytic reactions. Ethyl but-2-ynoate can be used as a preparative method for propionate by reacting it with hydrochloric acid. This compound can also be used as a chemical inhibitor, such as in the synthesis of nylon 6.
