Etifoxine is an anxiolytic drug that has been shown to inhibit axonal growth in vitro. It also has biological properties against infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis, and has been shown to be effective in treatment trials for these diseases. Etifoxine inhibits the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase enzyme, preventing transcription and replication of dsDNA. Etifoxine also binds to neurotransmitter receptors, including GABA-A, muscarinic M3, serotonin 5HT1A, and dopamine D2 receptors. This drug is often used in model systems for neurotrophic factors and experimental models for anxiety disorders.
