Esromiotin is a chemical that inhibits the activity of enzymes by binding to their active site. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of many cholinergic enzymes, such as acetylcholinesterase, as well as other pharmacological agents, such as benzalkonium chloride and physostigmine. Esromiotin can also be used for treating bowel disease, where it inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Esromiotin binds to nuclear DNA at a rate constant of 1.2 x 10 M-1 s-1 and is not toxic to cells in a concentration range from 0.5 to 5 mM.
