Description

4-Ethylphenol is a natural compound that is used in the preparation of 4-hydroxycinnamic acid. 4-Ethylphenol can be extracted from plants with dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) and then converted to 4-hydroxycinnamic acid. The conversion of 4-ethylphenol to 4-hydroxycinnamic acid can be done by activation with an oxidizing agent, such as sodium nitrate. This reaction requires two enzymes: hydroxylase and reductase. The hydroxylase converts 4-ethylphenol to catechol, while the reductase converts catechol to 4-hydroxycinnamic acid. The redox potential of the reaction determines how easily it will occur. Kinetic energy is required for this reaction to occur because it must overcome the activation barrier that exists at the double bond between carbons 1 and 2 in the catechol molecule.
