Eupatorin is a natural compound that is extracted from the leaves of Eupatorium purpureum. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in vivo and in vitro. The eupatorin extract has demonstrated inhibitory effects on matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and MMP-2 activities and an increase in the mitochondrial membrane potential of carcinoma cells, which may be due to its ability to modulate the activity of protein kinase C (PKC). In addition, eupatorin has been shown to induce cell death in neuronal cells by synchronous fluorescence. This effect was attributed to its ability to inhibit PKC activity and induce oxidative stress.
