Ethyl benzilate is a drug substance that belongs to the group of amides. It has the potential for use in animals as an anesthetic and analgesic, but has not yet been tested in humans. Ethyl benzilate is administered intravenously or intramuscularly in a dose range of 0.2-0.8 mg/kg body weight. It is metabolized by hydrolysis to ethyl diazoacetate, which reacts with acetylcholine (ACh) to form ethyl cholinesterase inhibitors. The depressant activity of this substance can be attributed to its anticholinergic properties, which inhibit the function of acetylcholine and lead to sedation by inhibiting motor nerve impulses at the myoneural junction.
