a-Ecdysone is a hormone that belongs to the ecdysteroids. It is a natural compound that is involved in the regulation of insect development, metabolism and immunity. This hormone has been shown to have an effect on energy metabolism and is used as a model system for studying this process. Ecdysis, or molting, is regulated by a-ecdysone and its analogs. These receptors regulate calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum during muscle contraction.
