2-Ethylhexane-1,3-diol (2EH) is a fatty acid that is used as a nutrient for the growth of cells in tissue culture. It also has antimicrobial properties and is effective against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, and Enterococcus faecalis. This molecule has shown to be nontoxic to human skin cells in vitro and can be used as an antimicrobial agent in cosmetics. 2EH can be synthesized from soybean extract or nepeta cataria by metal hydroxide catalysts. The chemical stability of this molecule has been demonstrated using hydrogen fluoride, fluoroacetic acid, or sodium carbonate as reagents. 2EH is commercially available as a glycol ester or glycol ether.
