4-Ethyltoluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used in the production of dyes and paints. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent odor. 4-Ethyltoluene has been shown to be mutagenic in urine samples and it reacts with zirconium oxide to form methyl ethyl zirconium species. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet understood. 4-Ethyltoluene also has been shown to have low toxicity for redox cycling reactions in biological treatment systems, as well as an affinity for polymorphonuclear leucocytes. 4-Ethyltoluene can be found in small amounts in water vapor and it has kinetic data determined at 25 degrees Celsius.
