Description:

Norgestrel is a progestin. It is a synthetic, fat-soluble drug that is used as an oral contraceptive and in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Norgestrel is also used to treat menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome. The drug's transformation from 2-ethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedione to norgestrel was first described by French chemist Charles Friedel and American chemist James Crafts in 1883. This reaction occurs through a condensation reaction with acetaldehyde yielding 1,3-diphenylcyclopropane.
