Europetin is a flavonol glycoside that has been shown to inhibit the growth of malignant melanoma cells. It inhibits cancer cell lines by decreasing the mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to apoptosis and cell death. Europetin also inhibits liver cells by inhibiting the metabolism of hydroxyl groups, leading to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species. This compound is found in natural compounds and has a chemical structure with two aromatic rings (a phenolic acid and an anthraquinone glycoside). The natural compounds are found in plants such as Euonymus europaeus, Aloe vera, or Angelica sinensis.
