It is an alkylating agent that inhibits the growth of fungi by reacting with amino and sulfhydryl groups in proteins. 2MEA has also been shown to be effective against bacteria, specifically those that produce alkoxy or hydroxypyrimidines. The mechanism of action for 2MEA is similar to that of other halogenated alkylating agents, such as chloroacetonitrile. 2MEA is used as a catalyst for the production of mercaptans and alkylthios.
