WF-3681 is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including penicillinase-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. WF-3681 also has antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and influenza A virus. This compound is not active against viruses such as HIV or cytomegalovirus. WF-3681 acts by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis, which prevents viral replication and leads to cell death.
