Description:

2-Furonitrile is a carbonyl group with an electron-withdrawing group. The compound interacts with nucleophilic molecules, such as hydroxide ions, by donating its electron-withdrawing group and forming a coordination complex. 2-Furonitrile also has a high affinity for acidic environments. The compound reacts readily with electron reducing agents to form furfural during the course of the reaction. The functional groups on the molecule are vinylene and phosgene, which have been shown to interact with metal surfaces. The structural analysis of 2-furonitrile shows that it contains heteroatoms in the form of two oxygen atoms and one nitrogen atom.
2-Furonitrile is used as an inhibitor molecule for polymerization reactions in polycarbonates and other organic compounds containing carbonate moieties.
