Fluortanone is a synthetic compound that was developed to inhibit the plant enzyme, 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), which catalyzes the conversion of shikimic acid and phosphoenolpyruvic acid into chorismate. Fluortanone binds to the carbonyl group of EPSPS, thereby inhibiting enzyme activity. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating cervical cancer in experimental models. Clinical studies are currently underway to determine its effectiveness as a cancer treatment in humans. Fluortanone is also used for the control of weeds and other pests by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which produces herbicide resistance. One disadvantage of this drug is that it can be hydrolyzed by trifluoroacetic acid.
