5-Formyl-2,4-dimethoxypyrimidine is an aromatic heterocycle with a chiral center. It is synthesized by the method of 5-formyluracil and can be used as a precursor for a number of functionalities. The compound has been cross-coupled with a variety of aldehydes to form five-membered rings and isoxazolidines. It also reacts with isoxazoles to form regioisomeric dimethoxyisoxazoles. 5-Formyl-2,4-dimethoxypyrimidine has been shown to react with uridine in order to produce 5,6-dihydrothymine and thymine.
