Cis-2-Fluoro-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (cis-2-FC) is a fluorinated anti-bacterial drug that belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. It has been shown to be an effective drug for the treatment of bacterial infections, and studies have shown that this drug is useful against Gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis. Cis-2-FC binds to sulfoxide groups in proteins, inhibiting their function and consequently leading to cell death. The antimicrobial activity of cis-2-FC is stereoselective; it is active against cells with D stereochemistry but not against those with L stereochemistry. This synthetic compound can be produced by the reaction of ethyl diazoacetate with chlorine or carbocyclic nucleosides followed by hydrolysis.
