Fructose-6-phosphate kinase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of fructose 6-phosphate and ATP to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate and ADP. It is found in a number of tissues, such as skeletal muscle, liver, brain, and kidney. Fructose-6-phosphate kinase is present in the cytosol and is activated by insulin. The activity of this enzyme can be measured by measuring the amount of phosphoenolpyruvate produced from ATP. Fructose-6-phosphate kinase has been shown to be associated with cancer cell metabolism. In addition, fructose 6-phosphate kinase has been shown to be involved in aerobic glycolysis in cancer cells. This enzyme is also active during fatty acid synthesis from glucose or glycerol substrates.
