Fosamprenavir calcium is a prodrug of amprenavir that is used in the treatment of HIV infection. It is a structural analogue of amprenavir, which has improved oral bioavailability and stability. The active metabolite, amprenavir, inhibits HIV-1 protease and HIV-2 protease by binding to the active site and blocking the cleavage of polyproteins into functional proteins. Fosamprenavir calcium has been shown to be safe and effective in controlling HIV infection with fewer side effects than other drugs.
