Fumaraldehyde bis(dimethyl acetal) is a marine sponge that has potent cytotoxicity. It is synthesized by oxidizing the heterocycle succinaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide, which produces fumaraldehyde bis(dimethyl acetal). The high cytotoxicity of this compound is attributed to its ability to form covalent bonds with proteins and DNA. Fumaraldehyde bis(dimethyl acetal) can also be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds such as pateamine.
