Description:Finasteride is a drug that acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. It is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, alopecia and other conditions involving hirsutism. Finasteride is metabolized to finasteride carboxylic acid (F-CAA) by the liver and excreted in urine. The F-CAA can be measured in urine samples, but it also has been found to be present in hair, breast milk and semen, suggesting that it may have systemic effects.
The most common interferences with assays for F-CAA are metyrapone and finasteride, which can interfere with assay results by binding to the testosterone molecule during extraction or by inhibiting its metabolism. In order to avoid these interferences, liquid-liquid microextraction or microextraction techniques should be used when analyzing urine samples for F-CAA.
