Product Information
- Formylciprofloxacin (M4)1-Cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-7-(4-formyl-1-piperazinyl)-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid
Formyl ciprofloxacin is an orally active prodrug of ciprofloxacin that has been shown to be effective against urinary tract infections. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to ciprofloxacin, its active form. Formyl ciprofloxacin has been shown to reduce the acidity of urine and increase the solubility of ciprofloxacin. This drug is metabolized through carbonyl reduction, which involves the removal of a hydrogen atom from the drug by NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase. Formyl ciprofloxacin also has antimycobacterial activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA.
