Foscarnet sodium is a drug that is used to treat infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It has been shown to be an effective antiviral agent for the treatment of HIV, especially when combined with other antiviral agents. Foscarnet sodium binds to viral DNA polymerase and inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA. It also has been shown to have a low cytotoxicity against normal cells in vitro. Foscarnet sodium interacts with a number of drugs, including acyclic nucleoside phosphonates, which are used in combination therapy for HIV. Foscarnet sodium also has been shown to inhibit the activity of p2y receptors, which may contribute to its antiviral effects.
