Formacetale is a molecule that contains two alkyl chains, one of which is an acid chain. It has been shown to be an effective antibacterial agent in fruit extract. Formacetale is also a potent acid catalyst, and can form acid by dehydration. The vibrational theory suggests that the molecule has a dipole moment due to the difference in electronegativity between the carbon and oxygen atoms. This dipole moment causes it to have an affinity for water molecules, which are attracted by the negative charge on the oxygen atom. The functional theory states that formacetale's ability to react with hydrogen ions (H+) and water (H2O) may also contribute to its potent antibacterial activity.
