Ferrous fumarate is an oral iron supplement that is used in the treatment of iron deficiency. Ferrous fumarate has been shown to be effective in reducing disease activity in infants with Crohn's disease. The low-dose group showed significantly less severe bowel disease than the high-dose group. Ferrous fumarate has also been shown to reduce oxidative stress, which may be due to its antioxidant properties. It is also used as a pharmacological agent for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, skin cancer, and other diseases. It is metabolized by hydrolysis of the ferric ion by esterases or glucuronidases and oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes or glutathione reductase.
