4-Fluorobenzyl mercaptan is a phenyl group with an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) active site. It has been found to be effective at inhibiting the growth of bacteria in vitro, and has been under clinical development for the treatment of bacterial infections. This compound was found to inhibit the formation of nitro groups on the cell surface, which is required for bacterial replication. 4-Fluorobenzyl mercaptan penetrates through lipid bilayers and reacts with nitro groups on the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, preventing them from being synthesized. The compound also changes the morphology of bacteria by binding to lipids in the membranes and causing them to aggregate together into clumps, which are then removed by phagocytic cells.
