Ferric dimethyldithiocarbamate is a chelating agent that binds to copper ions and inhibits the activity of dopamine β-hydroxylase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-DOPA to dopamine. This drug has been shown to be safe for use in humans at doses up to 2500 mg/day. The optimum concentration of ferric dimethyldithiocarbamate is 0.04 mM, suggesting that it can be used as a model system for studying other chemical substances.
