This reagent competes with other nucleophiles such as ammonia and hydrazine. Fmoc-Arg(Boc)2-OH is also used to form esters by reacting with carboxylic acids. As an intramolecular reaction, it reacts with itself to yield a benzyl group on the side chain that is not attached to the nitrogen atom.
