2-Fluorobenzotrifluoride is a fluorinating agent used in the synthesis of organic compounds. It is used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and as a fluorescent probe for the detection of phenolic compounds. It can be synthesized by dehydrogenative coupling of 2-fluoroaniline with phenylacetylene. This reaction occurs at room temperature, with no need for a catalyst, although it may be accelerated by using copper(II) chloride or other metal catalysts. The product can be analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC). 2-Fluorobenzotrifluoride has been shown to react with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is an important component of many textiles, to produce water and carbon dioxide.
