Ferric citrate is a pharmaceutical agent that contains iron as the active ingredient and is used to treat iron deficiency. Ferric citrate is taken orally, and it binds to ferric ions in the stomach and intestine which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. The iron then binds to transferrin in the blood, which carries it to cells throughout the body. Ferric citrate has been shown to have inhibitory properties on basic fibroblast cells. It inhibits transcriptional regulation by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication of DNA. The optimum concentration of ferric citrate for this effect is between 0.1 mM and 1 mM.
