Description

The drug is a calcium salt of (3R,5R)-7-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-phenyl-4-(phenylcarbamoyl)-5-propan-2-ylpyrrol-1-yl]-3,5-dihydroxyheptanoic acid. It is an oral hypolipidemic agent that has been shown to reduce serum cholesterol levels and atherosclerotic lesion in humans. The mechanism of action of this drug is not fully understood but it may be due to its ability to reduce the expression of LDL receptors. This drug has been shown to inhibit the production of apoB in cultured cells and may also act by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol. It also inhibits cellular proliferation and reduces cellular proliferation in patients with chronic renal failure. The side effects are generally mild and include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness, insomnia, rash, and muscle pain.
